SPIDER IN THE SKY

A smooth but unexceptional version of the often-told American Indian tale about the animals' efforts, and a small one's success, in bringing the first light and warmth to the world. The origin of the skunk's white streak and the eagle's bald spot are nicely integrated, and the spider's returning, with the sun, along a thread she had spun makes a satisfying solution. But the story is told so briefly, even hastily, that there's no time for drama, action, humor, or any sort of development. And Owens' fine-line illustrations neither suit the tale's simplicity nor provide the missing vitality.
