P. T. Barnum was born on July 5, 1810, and all his life he tried to make up for missing the Independence Day fireworks and parades. Add to this a flair for head work and promotion, the memory of a practical-joking grandfather, and the attractions of Jenny Lind, Tom Thumb, and Jumbo, and you have it--The Greatest Show on Earth. Thus Edwards sketches a personable, crowd-loving showman; but without a hint of the humbug that made Barnum a colorful one, it's only a onering circus.
