FIRST LOVE, TRUE LOVE

This young romance is based on the premise that ""going steady"" is not only a normal but a healthy approach to preparation for mature romance. Anne Emery offers some comforting solutions in a rather set story. Pat Marlowe, a junior at Allandale High School, has no boy friends and thinks it would be dreamy if Tim Davis, a handsome senior, would date her. When he finally does and they fall for each other, they meet adult opposition to their decision to ""go steady"". Emotional balance on both sides (though it seems to us that Pat does all the adjusting), brings them to the realization that after college divides their paths they must date other people and keep their romance on a level of sensible friendship, and the doubting elders accept the situation. What doesn't convince this reader is the overt one sideness of a relationship which seems to show Pat as holding no aim in life but love.
