Pat Marlowe, a freshman at a midwestern University, is an attractive, well-adjusted girl. Her general inclination to conformity has made her high school career easy sailing, but it is just this tendency to conformity which leads her into a premature engagement and its attendant heartbreak. Her first year at college, the gradual awareness that she and her fiance, Tim Davis, (the boy she's known for years) are in many ways incompatible, and Tim's ultimate rejection of their engagement, brings a sad wisdom to Pat Marlow, who with bitter-sweet relief, accepts her imposed but promising freedom. Despite a saccharine style and a main character who is somewhat uninspired, Anne Emery, through her understanding of the painful problem of her heroine, has managed to concoct a story here which should prove highly attractive to many teen-age girls.
