Eventful years of Federation about 1787, with glimpses of historically familiar figures like Revere, Hancock, and the men who forged the constitution for a new nation background, this story of Timothy Swain, Boston apprentice to a shipowner, an honest man interested in the welfare of the country. Timothy's father did not return from a voyage, and Timothy and his friend Ben become involved in adventure with traitorous, slave-trading Ezra Cobb. And eventually adventure ends in the discovery of Timothy's father who has been held prisoner in the hold of Cobb's vessel. Wharves, countinghouse, impressed sailors, sea-dogs, bullies, the merchant's lovely daughter, the pasty-faced, useless rich relation, and poor boys making good -- of such are the ingredients for a tale twelve to fifteen year olds will love.
