SAMSON AND DELILAIL

From angelic announcement to the silence following Samson's shattering of the Philistine temple, this respectful rendering transfers biblical perspective into modern relief and never tampers with the tone of the original. The few additional details -- Delilah tempting with almonds, grapes and figs -- are wholly in keeping with time and place and the minor deletions -- e.g. the riddle episode -- don't alter the basic nature of his tricky character. The strong expressionistic drawings in red and black are generally effective although the red is too severe in places and some designs will be too abstruse for casual eyes . Like Reed's Adam and Eve (p.689, J-263) a well conceived production although a less attractive entity.
