TOSHIO AND TAMA

Second of the books about Japanese children and like the title to follow, Where The Carp Banners Fly, it tells the story of what post-war life is like there. It is more readable and has much better and more natural characterization even though this too dwells on the problems and hardships that come as a result of war. Here, too, however, grandmother, grandfather, the children's mother, who is a Christian and who has worked in a mission in Tokyo during the war -- all represent the different opinions and influence that are felt in Japan today. Still Toshio's friendship with an American soldier, his concern over the loss of the flashlight the soldier gave him and his through enjoyment of Boys' Day Festival are warm and realistic.
