Durnan’s fantasy debut series starter sees three Australian children transported to a fabulous land up in the clouds.
Eleven-year-old Billy and his cousins, 10-year-old Ruby and 12-year-old James, live in New South Wales, Australia. They’re exploring a deserted theme park one day when a sudden storm prompts them to take shelter in the Sky Rocket ride. A lightning strike brings the rocket to life, and it takes the trio high into the air, depositing them on Carnival Cloud—one of several fantastic, floating city-states in the skies above Earth. Billy, Ruby, and James befriend 9-year-old Floss and her 11-year-old brother, CJ, who introduce them to the marvels of Carnival Cloud. These include a multitude of animals (including flying, flatulent emus), cloud surfing, a breathtaking lighthouse/observatory, and even a special arena for human flight. The cousins thrive in their new environment and make emotional breakthroughs: Billy becomes more accepting of his parents’ separation and grandfather’s death; Ruby learns to express her opinions; and James gains the confidence to be himself. However, black clouds encroach on the trio, steered by ruthless pirates whose moisture-stealing raids could destroy Carnival Cloud forever. Durnan presents a simple narrative supplemented by bright, bubbly, uncredited color illustrations at the start of each chapter. Although the protagonists have specific personality quirks, they share a tendency toward positive, uplifting interactions; when James encounters bullies, for instance, he’s able to win them over with words. This strips the text of anything likely to cause anxiety and results in a somewhat saccharine atmosphere; also, the joyously silly dialogue makes it seem as if the main players are younger than they are. Still, the author authentically captures the energy of kids enjoying themselves while also including messages about protecting the environment, navigating loss, and taking responsibility. Durnan focuses on the best parts of friendship and childhood and, in doing so, should gain the approval of young readers.
A safe middle-grade adventure with a clear sense of wonder.
