THE MYSTERY AT SHINGLE ROCK

This time writing with her daughter, Mrs. Govan (see Tilly's Strange Secret, The Summer etc.) relates another mystery tailored for ten year olds. Set in Cherokee country, there is the brisk atmosphere of a southern mountain summer and horses as Mickey, Tod, Bitsy and the gang form a club, partly, at first, to ward off the derision of their older brothers and sisters. Their hideout is a cave near an old mine and something more than club life soon begins to happen. Mysterious voices are heard in the mine; old Mrs. Davis' bonds are stolen; there is a threat to a local race horse owned by a friend. As the mystery is solved, and the kids catch the culprits, the story is pleasant light reading.
