The ""thoughts"" and ""words"" of a herd of heifers, especially of Little One who wants to wear the lead bell. The heifers sympathize when Daisy steps into a woodchuck hole, converse with a cowbird about having bad luck with her eggs, discuss with some deer the merits of horns, scold a member for eating too many apples, hear the troubles of an albino deer ostracized during the hunting season. Little One finally gets her bell and a new name (""Belle"") and they all return to the barn for the winter. Bovine even if you believe in anthropomorphizing, and the drawings make Elsie look good.
