THE PICTURE STORY OF JOCKEY STEVE CAUTHEN

This is just another third-rate compilation of the events in The Kid's career, and its only advantage over Tuttle's better-looking Steve Cauthen (1978) is its later release. Considering Steve's subsequent record, that's not much of an advantage. Mueser does take him through his 1978 Triple Crown triumph, but then comes the anticlimactic losing streak which she refers to as ""a bit of a slump"" and attributes to agent Lenny Goodman's heart attack. The book ends with Cauthen's loss of the Marlboro Cup; ""it showed him to be human,"" Mueser concludes lamely. The smart money will wait for next year's entry--whether a happier update on Cauthen or a new Wonder Kid job on Ron Franklin.
