Anne Maybury has become one of the better practitioners of overcast light love and fear, and here there's much less of the ""fancy stuff,"" as she calls it. The scene is the Hebrides where Judith wonders why her charming, dangerous husband Lewis is missing; or how their son (whom Lewis wanted to appropriate, exclusively) finds her ring on a rock at the Bay; or whether she's in her right mind--you know, the one he's trying to frighten her out of. Only a one-ply story but pleasant.
