South America presents a less familiar and more complex picture than Europe of ten years ago, and America of five years ago. So Anne Peck has wisely refrained from turning biographer, economist and historian, and simply shares what she sees and enjoys -- and does it admirably. One goes with her from port to port, by train and bus and plane inland to the mountains and the plains and over them to another coast line. We see the people and their homes, the way they live, the things they do, their shops and public buildings and parks and places of amusement; we see the odd corners and the places the ordinary cruise tourist misses. We get the sense and feel of our South American neighbors. This is the sort of book that should be taken a bit at a time, as supplementary reading, or as travel companion and guide.
