KIRKUS REVIEW

Long family saga of boy-into-man in an upstate New York farming community, a story based on homespun American spiritual staples, with a few by-blows for salting. Felix was deserted by his glamorous actress mother and left with his grandfather and aunt. This gave him a good deal of inner conflict -- typified later on by his struggle between banking, the family's choice of a career, and the theatre. He has mixed loyalties towards the two women in his life, Mara, childhood sweetheart, erratic, melodramatic, who bears an illegitimate child and runs away; and Lois, whom he marries. Some will like this -- I thought it not very successful.
