The Tower children hoped desperately that they might find the treasure which was rumored to have been left by a mysterious traveler, Orford Wells, who had died many years earlier at Top of the World, the family homestead. Their father wished to finance a mountain climbing expedition through selling the house. The children tried everything they could think of to fatten the exchequer: a play, sale of lemonade, etc. A storm dislodged the package which they dreamed of -- but the cache proved to be Wells' poetry. But their great- grandfather comes through in the final chapter with promise of enough money to keep the old house -- a somewhat anticlimactic denouement, since he had been sitting by from the first chapter. Disappointing.
