Brand new fairy tales based on the old, old plots are told here in lavish detail. Pietro, the poor wood-cutter, makes a difficult journey to find the winter flower for the princess and then finds it in his own garden, after he has helped a poor but beautiful peasant. A burnt-out dragon in the land of Panga-Ponga is restored to his former usefulness (the king has him breathe fire at the enemies to scare them away) by the blacksmith. An unhappy little step-sister saves a unicorn and is rewarded by being taken to the castle where she answers the magic question which removes the spell on the prince. The daughter of a poor flower-seller is captured by a man-arin but saved by a stranger whose silkworms spin a ladder for her to escape. These are some of the stories included in this well-balanced collection. Told with delicate humor and full of sumptuous insights, this collection will be enjoyed by any avid reader of fairy tales. Seen without the illustrations of Mircea Vasilia.
