A very elderly opera singer dies leaving her considerable estate to her dutiful, and duller, daughter Betsy to the exclusion of a more attractive one and some expectant grandsons. The scene is a rectory and the tradition genteel, rarely traveling from one paragraph to the next without a ""my pet"" or ""my duck."" In between endearments the plot is sketchy but the genre exists as a reminder that there will always be an England. . .of the cucumber sandwich.
