THE BEGINNING KNOWLEDGE BOOK OF FOSSILS

Sparse of text and really sparing with that beginning knowledge, this picture story reads like a third-grade report that's earned a ""C--"": one page or double-page per fossil, over half of which is (sickly) colored illustration, amounts to bare exposure and says little of import or interest. Some facts are tossed off, few are integrated, and the periodic charts on the endpapers lack an explanatory foundation altogether. William H. Matthews is just one author who tells more better.
