A department store in northwest Texas is the central character to which all human elements are subordinated, a Grand Hotel recipe for the story of the lives connected with it. From Easter through January sales, developments in various situations are high-spotted. There is the hard-pushing merchandise manager and his ambitions; there is the detached owner; there is the loyal old guard and the grimly determined younger recruits; there are the plain folks and the newly rich oil well magnates. The store's policy of honesty and quality -- along with a ruthlessly determined play for all available business makes the store dominate all personal problems. Goodish department store stuff, better gauged to rental appetites than to sales.
