A very basic concept book. A small girl and 'her mother arrive at the beach; their possessions are enumerated and shown. Sandpipers, footprints, seaweed, shells, castles and channels, the lifeguard, swimming, sunning--each is briefly mentioned and also depicted in the simplest of line drawings washed with watercolor. But the lines are so skillfully drawn, the broad areas of almost solid color so judiciously chosen and applied, that the reader can almost smell the sea and hear the cry of the gulls. Any baby old enough to enjoy the beach would enjoy looking at this book and recognizing familiar objects and scenes; for a two- or three-year-old, it would make a fine preliminary to a first visit to the beach; and a first grader should be able to read it independently. Attractive and sure robe useful.
