KIRKUS REVIEW

Fun to follow and to look at too -- illustrated directions for Red Rover, giant steps, kick the can, musical chairs, and about 40 other popular children's games. Rockwell's populous, playful watercolors (sometimes in comic strip sequence with balloon dialogue) put different dressed-up animals through the motions of the games -- Mao-shirted pandas play Chinese Hop, elegantly garbed sardines hide and seek in a formally appointed drawing room, and tartan-clad rabbits maneuver smartly through a hopscotch diagram. The framed directions are invitingly superimposed on the pictures, and though the oversized format may put off children old enough to read them, Rockwell's combination of bustling pages with a kindergarten/party/rainy day resource should make this a winner.
