Do you know how to plant cabbages? Turn to page 11, where you'll find full instructions in the extravagant pictures that go with each verse--which is to say, know French or no French the meanings are clear and bountifully colored in the painted vignettes a la mode of every song. (Idiomatic translations in the back, too.) And the songs themselves are the creme de la creme: 29 of the crispest, swingiest, storiest sallies in the repertoire of French nurseries from Avignon to Auvergne, with people you've met like ""Frere Jacques"" and ""Cadet Rousselle"" who has three houses, and tunes you've heard like ""Ah! Vous Dirai-je, Maman"" (Twinkle, twinkle by any other name), and many, many new-to-us old ones. As for the music--just the bold melody lines with guitar chords noted on top, uncluttered and eminently singable. Do.
