A summer job with a congenial veterinarian, and a few dates with a ""worldly"" collegiate eighteen-year old, prove strenuous for Susan Duncan and her fragile sixteen years. Neurotic parents, an invalid grandmother, a friendly dog, and an adolescent brother clutter Susan's hours away from work. Mid-summer, Keene, the collegiate, leaves New Jersey to work in Newfoundland, with only a few cold parting words to Susan. After one brief, heart-rending sob, Sue rallies with amazing self-control, and welcomes ome Dave, the old reliable, with a ""happy little hug"". The author too often finds teenagers adorable, cute, precious, in this cliched, unrealistic story. Teen agers will not recognize themselves or their problems in Susan who does not react, except for a few whimpers and smiles, to the people around her.
