FREEDOM AND WELFARE IN THE CARIBBEAN

The Caribbean area presents a depressing picture of a long record of trouble, unrest and backward social and economic and political development. Their wealth was long since stripped- what there was of it; they are now the direct responsibility of the mother countries,- the United States, Great Britain, France. The author's concern seems to be more specifically with the American and British islands, and she discusses the overall problems under specific headings- education, housing, working conditions, social structure, political activities, finance- rather than dealing with each of the Caribbean islands as a First hand experience and investigation, heavily documented with facts and figures, indicate that the situation is a disgrace to the powers, that it provides soil for growth and breeding of Communism, and that a solution lies in the transfer of knowledge and skills rather than goods, to make the peoples self-sustaining. Easy reading and revealing. One of the projects done under the Yale Institute of International Studies.
