Love lost, love regained is really the only theme of this remarkably slight romance debut from celebrity journalist Garrett (a.k.a. Kelli Pryor of Entertainment Weekly and New York magazine). Hotshot New York reporter Tess Boone is less than pleased when her editor and best friend, Logan, gives Tess her next assignment: an in-depth profile of country-western singing sensation Buck Campbell. But almost in spite of herself, Tess drives to Branson, Missouri, where Buck's manager/wife, Georgia Hill, has been willing to grant a few hours of closely supervised interview time. Only Tess knows that she's really driving back to where she herself was born and raised, and where she first met and fell in love with Buck Campbell--or Jamie, as he was known back in high school--before he was discovered and marketed by Georgia Hill. When Tess and the former football star reunite, it doesn't take the magazine photographer's observation that they were made for each other to underline their still burning passion. Jamie borrows longtime friend Wayne's (as in Newton's) helicopter and cabin getaway for a few nights with Tess, sending her established world into a tailspin: Can she consider giving up the career she initially left him for to have the happiness that has eluded her for so long in New York? Minor hitches threaten the love match--in the form of Georgia, who's been paying off a former business partner to keep quiet about Buck's past, and Heather, a People magazine reporter on the prowl for a scoop--but by the time Jamie's sweet voice and tightly denimed rear have wooed Tess permanently back to the Ozarks (where she immediately has a baby but plans to work freelance out of her home), the only surprise is that it's taken so long. No dissonant notes or other clunkers here, just a rather monotonous, predictable melody.
