The Twelve Apostles ($25.00; Mar.; 224 pp.; 0-7278-5494-1): The new Chief Inspector Webb tale from Fraser (Eleven
That Went Up to Heaven, 1999, etc.) follows the odd goings-on witnessed by the widow Verity Ryder once she moves to Shillingham to be closer to her in-laws, the notorious Greenwood family. And odd they are indeed: A clergyman is seen arguing with Verity’s brother-in-law Adam and dies soon afterward—after struggling with his last breath to whisper "the twelve apostles" to Verity. What can this mean? Adam has a collection of rare "apostle spoons," but he’s hardly capable of murder. Or is he?
Fortunately, we have Inspector Webb on hand to sort things out.
