Arthur Crook, a diamond in the rough lawyer-detective, is given to tooling around in an old yellow Rolls Royce through plots that show a brave indifference to over- familiarity. But what could be more familiar than the damsel under duress who persists against all reason in staying in a creepy French Alpine villa? Sarah Hollis eventually disappears and it is A.C. and a priest to the rescue. This odd blend of Gothic/Gumshoe/Father Brown is not so much a passenger to nowhere as it is aimed at a predictable, uncritical audience.
