NORTH AMERICA, with introduction & notes; by Donald Smalley & Bradford Allen Booth

For those who want their Trollope complete, this is a bonanza. I can find no record of its being available in an American edition, with the exception of a University Press edition of the 20 letters to the Liverpool Mercury, entitled Tireless Traveler, which form a part of this volume. From the literary point of view, I don't think this enhances Trollope's reputation. But- read in connection with his mother's almost vitriolic report on America, it has historical and social interest. The journeying took him from Boston to the Mississippi, via Niagara, Buffalo, Illinois, Missouri, back to New York, Washington, and a second stopover in Boston, where alone he found spiritual kinship. The period followed his mother's trip by thirty years, and was, he confessed, slightly inconvenienced by the Civil War (on which he has a good deal to say). He wishes to be favorable without being eulogistic, but I doubt whether Americans of the time felt that he achieved his goal. An odd bit of scholarship- this publishing event, but important in the Trollope revival picture.
