THE WISDOM OF CATHOLICISM

An anthology made from the richness of Catholic literature, literature for the most part which belongs to the world. Here we find extracts from St. Augustine's City of God, from Bethius' The Consolation of Philosophy, from the writings of the ancients- St. Anselm of Canterbury, St. Bornard of Clairvaux; from classicists such as Thomas Aquinas, Thomas a Kempis, Petrarch, Dante; The Parson's Tale by Chaucer; The Ballade of Our Lady by Francois Villon; Erasmus. Then approaching more nearly modern times, we find Cardinal Newman's Apologia Pre Sua Vita, and Encyclicals from some of the famous Popes, Pope Leo XIII, Pope Piuc XI, Pope Pius XII. Among the contemporaries in literature we read Sigrid Undset, Hilairo Belloo, Christopher Dawson, Jacques Maritain, Gilbert Chesteron. There are other Catholic saints- St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Bonaventure, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross. The anthology offers great variety,- religious experience, inspiration, teaching, learned theological treatises, simple, candid expressions of faith. It is astonishing that such a volume has not previously been available.
