After the minimally stitched adventures of The Knitted Cat (KR, 1972 & 1974) this explodes into fantastic pop graphics and popsicle colors as the matronly magician Miranda turns the city square into a playground with traffic sign trees and the policeman into a pink elephant. Too bad it's a onetime trick; the rest -- the kids' search for a place to play circus and the town council meeting that approves their new playground -- is merely a framework. A cheerful romp, though neither the two-dimensional Miranda nor her young playmates are likely to inspire any lasting attachments.
