The life of the poet Heine, by the biographer of Stresemann. A much better book than the only recent life of Heine, by Marcusse, published by Farrar & Rinehart and reported in November, 1933 (page 179). Unlike that biography, the poet and his work are here closely linked, and the impact of a rather tragic emotional career, of successive missteps in business and society and politics and religion, is shown not only in its effect on the sensitive, introspective man, but on his work. Without minimizing his weaknesses, she succeeds none the less in building up sympathy and understanding of the man and his poetry. Not a book for a very wide sale, but an important book for anyone interested in the development of German literature and in a new slant on the literary life of the 19th century in Paris, where he spent most of his creative years.
