SEE AND SAY

A striking picture book in four languages presents a vocabulary of some 50 common words in English, French, Italian and Spanish as well as some highly colorful identifying block prints by its author-artist who comes from Uruguay. Mr. Frasconi has gained a name in other fields- in both commercial and gallery work, and his big, angular figures have an engagingly childlike quality. They are pleasing vehicles here for the words- each printed in a different color corresponding to the country. However, where layout and format would seem to gear this for five and six year olds, it may take an older mentality to keep interested. We hope it proves the right kind of stimulus for early language consciousness.
