An unpretentious and rather superficial study of a convent school, probably aiming to be a Catholic school MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM, but lacking the psychological subtleties, and the emotional quality of the earlier book. However, it is a graphic story of the daily round, with its emphasis on rigid discipline, and the gradual inculcating of an unreasoning acceptance of the inevitability of the faith. One feels, however, the depths and power of the church, although one resents the limited viewpoint and intolerance and impersonality of the routine. A book that girls trained in a convent school will probably appreciate because of the memories invoked, rather than any creative value in the story itself. Beautiful style.
