THE WILD OLD WICKED MAN and Other Poems

MacLeish is an elder statesman of American poetry and politics -- he has won three Pulitzer prizes and held many important offices. He has changed less than the world around him and his traditional lyric poems do not reflect it but deal with the durable themes of age, love, death, children, seasons at home and abroad, and man's relations to his inner self. The conventional reader will find his simply-stated ideas and insights more than accessible: the more sophisticated will again contend that his poetry, while wearing well, has not improved with age.
