Six women who seem to be closely related to the most famous American tall-tale heroes (they have names like Sal Fink, Betsey Blizzard, and Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett) make a series of flamboyant arrivals and then feast on five kinds of tea, a mountain of authentically named food, including 40 kinds of corn bread, blackberry grunt, blueberry slump, and snickerdoodles, and have a grand exchange of tall tales of their own--with such feminine twists as Sal Fink's huge pancakes, which make cozy bedcovers as well as providing breakfast in bed next morning. The vigorous, brightly colored illustrations add to the laugh-aloud fun. Just right for tall-tale assignments.
