Pop Rowan had been missing ever since he agreed to guide the stranger named Broton to Dead Man's Guich. His son a to lead a second party along the same trail in order to trace his father's whereabouts. With the unsavory, sinister Hopper and his frightened niece Aggie, Sage takes to the hills, canyons and narrow passes that lead from Cactus Bend to Dead Man's Gulch. The mystery of Pop Rowan's disappearance is solved when Broon and Hopper meet in the deserted ghost town and enter into an open struggle over legal rights to the hidden gold mine. Brocton outwits his unscrupulous half-brother and than leads Sage to the mine shaft which has held his father prisoner these many weeks. Father and son are reunited, the villain is captured and justice triumphs as readers close another chapter on a twice told but ever popular western theme.
