GREAT AMERICAN CAVALRYMEN

A combination of horses and battles in 10 sketches provides book bait for reluctant readers among the boys. From revolutionary times through WWI, ""the cavalry was the elite"" with ""dash, bravado and glory."" Each section concentrates on the career of a famous cavalryman (Pulaski, Jackson, Pershing, Patton, etc.). Through their stories, the history of fighting horse divisions moves forward with information about strategy, the care of mounts and changes in drill. The book ends with a discussion of the of mechanized units, the last use of horses in the Italian campaign of WWII, and a brief word about how horses would have been able to help in Korea -- but the Army has no more. These are brief, active essays. Battle books continue to enjoy popularity in both bookstores and libraries.
