THE STORY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER

The more adult attitude of this first of Signature's new batch of biographies seems to bode good for the series. Though Florence Means' Carver's George was a better study of the Negro scientist and though Carver was a man whose life was unquestionably good, Arna Bontemps has done him justice in a friendly, straight forward narrative that does not fall into sentiment. A fault lies in the lack of emphasis on science. There is not as much either of Carver's early fascination with plants or his later performance of the miracle of the peanuts at Tuskegee as Florence Means gives us, but on the whole it is a meaningful account, sure to hold this age group's interest.
