Twelve stories of Negroes who have ""made good"" against the all too obvious odds. In varied fields, commercial art, public nursing, symphonic, conducting, hat designing, aeronautics, chemistry, night club entertainment, sociology, etc., including such famous names as Hazel Scott, Dean Dixon, Col. Benjamin Davis, Jr., head of the 332nd Fighter Group, E. Simms Campbell, James E. Luvalle. Almost all the stories are treated the same --the early years, the struggle against poverty or prejudice, the beginning of success. Many of the people are still in their twenties and have great fields ahead of them. I could only wish the book were better written, but that they exist at all is a note of hopefulness.
