VIOLENCE AND YOUR CHILD

Based on some newspaper articles written in 1968, this is an overheated and thuddingly hortatory discussion of violence as stimulated by films, comics and toys. So what else is new -- not very much since the early Wertham stomps of the '50's (acknowledged here) trimmed with the newer notions of the theorists of aggression and supplemented throughout with various research studies, investigations and remedial attempts (the meaningless film code, for one). Mr. Arnold takes potshots at all kinds of people -- Marshal (sic) McLuhan, Bettelheim, Schlesinger and one two three altogether -- James Fennimore Cooper, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sax Rohmer. Some of his recommendations to parents at the close include monitoring the tube until ""he is at least ten or 12 years old"" and by no means permitting daily viewing, and barring all movies including westerns which feature violence. He is also against the draft and suggests only a six weeks training period as an ""education for war."" ............. Rant, cant and shant.
