SEX AND THE NEW MORALITY

Recognizing that our society is the victim of great confusion in the areas of sex and sexual morality, the author, an Episcopal clergyman and college chaplain, undertakes to examine the issues arising out of the ""new morality."" He defines this morality as one that searches out the rationale and spirit of a code and calls for loyalty to this spirit, above loyalty to the letter of any particular rule. Freedom in such a view can be understood and accepted only as conjoined with responsibility. Sexuality is to be understood only as one component of a holistic view of the human person: the realization of one's sexuality (which is not to be restricted simply to sex activity) amounts to the realization of one's identity. In developing this position, the author discusses the relation of sex to such aspects of current social phenomena as violence, facial strife, and civil justice. Among current discussions of this important subject, this contribution stands out for its solid thinking, its moral concern, and its depth of insight. Addressed primarily to the young unmarried, it should be of great help to older adults, single and married as well.
