With quite a touch of the Bissell brush this carries a light brief for the dollar chase in which a brash bachelor becomes first a money man, then a money man without money and for a finale a willing groom. Bill Roth, 23 and currently an engineering student, sees the light about the slow buck and the fast nickel, and, unable to persuade the family's wealthy Uncle Simon to back him, gets an assist from Uncle Henry for a start in the dyestuff business. His is a first person story of the practices he encounters, his spurt to riches through an East Indian representative of maharajahs, his troubles with buying and selling, producing on demand. The way he becomes involved with Adele Hertz, whose sister Alice turns out to be a double threat, are part of a young, not completely coherent, side glance at a world in which inexperience and impudence win more than they have earned. Impertinent but not impervious.
