TOOLS: Shapers of Civilization

This is a serious look at the interrelationship between technology and civilization. It is not so much history per se, but a consideration of various aspects of modern life that children today take for granted -- transportation, construction, food production, clothing, lumbering, mining, communication, power, and medicine. The author has insight and great skill in giving each topic a detailed well-balanced and coherent treatment. Vast amounts of information are assimilated yet the writing has impetus and interest. There is a short bibliography in addition to the books mentioned in the text.
