A complete, clear, well-organized explanation of the medical understanding of arthritis, and of ways of living with it: the first all-round guide in some years. As the initial overview points out, arthritis can take a variety of forms, which affect all ages; the most familiar, the wear-and-tear disease of osteoarthritis, appears in old age. The authors explain the body-workings affected by the disease (joint structure, the immune system); describe diagnosis and treatment (balanced rest, exercise, medication); and then look at pain control measures (heat application, massage, and relaxation techniques among others). Surgery has a place, because of the advance in joint-replacement techniques (even the small finger joints can be replaced); but the emphasis is on living with the disease rather than expecting miracles from treatment. Readers are alerted to common problems, such as the emotional effects of having a chronic disease, and strongly advised against trying unproven remedies--like special diets and DMSO. The bulk of the guide then lays out the specifics--causes, effects, diagnosis, treatment, long-range outlook--for each form of arthritis. Straightforward, methodical assistance for sufferers--transcending recent, diet- or exercise-oriented volumes.
