KIRKUS REVIEW

Personal and national history of the early days in the far west which is undramatized, not highly colored -- instructive perhaps rather than seductive. The early pathfinders, -- French, Spanish, on to Lewis and Clark, Piks and others; the early trappers and traders, the dangers, duress of their lives; forests; wild game; Indians; cowboys and cattle drives, gold hunting, freighting and the Pony Express, and here and there highlighting of such famous figures as Kit Carson. Rough times given somewhat treatment for educational rather than entertainment purposes.
