The story of the Negro in the various cities of America, through his migrations and crusades, and as epitomized by the various leaders who sought a new place to live -- a better way to live. From the pioneer days when Du Sable founded Chicago, to the underground days of the Civil War and William Still, leading member of the Railroad, John Jones, the friend of John Brown, and others. Various movements and personalities, Single, the ""Moses of the colored exodus"", Marcus Garvey and his ""Africa for the Africans"", Poul Lawrence Dunbar -- the poet; and Adah Menkon -- the actress; the riots of East St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit; the present movement to the west and the reception there. Lives which have served as object lesson and promise to a race which is still fighting for equal rights, simply told.
