KIRKUS REVIEW

Hand in hand with Water -- Or Your Life (1951) this makes its plea for sound conservation practices as they are related to trees and wood and as a safeguard to man's place in ecology. The ""trail of the ax"" and its story of the dissipation, waste and exploitation this great natural resource leads into the history of the U.S. Forest Service, its operation and the training required, the complex community of the forest's life, flood and fire and the new tribe of Smoke Jumpers, and the importance of watershed maintenance. The devious and disastrous tactics of the land grab gang and a survey of old and new uses of wood and the results that have -- and will come from research wind up this documentary. This is propaganda for a public that needs rousing, which is able and informed, and which offers excellent reference and rebuttal material.
