KIRKUS REVIEW

The author of numerous technical and science fiction works tells of one of the great engineering achievements in communications -- the laying of the submarine cable, from the first crude attempts in 1858 to the development of the telephone cable in 1956. He covers the pioneering days of Cyrus Field, Morse, the scientists, Lord Kelvin, Oliver Heaviside when fabulous fortunes depended on what was little better than a thread beneath the ocean, to today's scientific frontiers within the laboratory. This is not offered as a thorough presentation of submarine communications, yet much of the material is of a highly technical nature, would require more than a surface acquaintance with electronics.
