THE SMALL COMMUNITY

This book is very slow in getting under way, so that at the close one feels almost like going back to reread the start and see if, after all, it was as interesting reading as the last half. The author -- known through the TVA and Antioch College associations, here marshals the problems -- and some of the answers -- of the small community today. He studies the place of the small community in the larger life, and the result is not only a sociological study, but a practical guide for improving conditions, for studying one's own community needs, for organizing groups, for adapting cooperative measures, and so on. Stimulating and constructive as it is, one cannot help but feel that a deliberate detachment from defense problems and matters of immediate moment make this a book for the long term rather than the present.
