HAWK OF DETROIT

Pub Date: Oct. 13th, 1939

Presumably the story of Cadillac's expedition to Detroit, and its founding, the book turns out to be a rather laggardly and technical account of wilderness roughing, and mostly the experiences of Cadillac's young cousin, Jules, among the Indians. There is little characterization, little drama although in actuality a great deal happens, difficulties in Canada, in Paris, disorder among the English and among the Indians. Jules, the unintentional focus, works as Cadillac's right hand man, goes to live among the Indians, marries a Huron girl, and eventually is the only one accepted by the redskins. The city is eventually founded, after almost ten years of struggle, and Cadillac returns to France. Don't stock heavily for it will Gitche-Gumee-d up.*First by the word, second by the pen
